Luminous Flux

Luminous Flux

These autumn leaves are transposed like a Tiffany stain glass by the fleeting afternoon sun .. Somehow beauty is heightened by impermenance. This oil on canvas board is 16 x 20 inches

'Fly High' Wild Geese

'Fly High' Wild Geese

A frequent sight in the fens of the UK, wild geese head back to familiar waters to rest up for the night. The sky is rapidly draining of colour but vibrant in these final minutes. The painting size is 16 x 11.50 x 0.5 inches

Mist Forest Day Break

Mist Forest Day Break

A moment of fleeting beauty as early morning sun streams through the trees at the top of a mountain. I used a photo I took in 2019, at the summit of Copolia mountain after ascending in pitch black in torrential rain. As the mist rose from the forest floor the sunlight caught the emerging colours of the mosses and ferns on the granite rocks. The sides are painted deep ultramarine. Painting size is 24 x 18 x 0.5 inches

Flying to Roost

Flying to Roost

I live in Sutton -on- the -Isle, in the Fens, which is raised above a tidal flood plain. Periodically we are flooded and many roads closed. This area is known as The Gault due to its thick clay and is a haven for waterfowl, especially Lapwing,Teal,Hooper and Mute swans. As the temperature drops in the evening, the mist starts to rise and it is easy to imagine how travelers in the past could lose their way. The painting size is 24 x 18 x 0.5 inches

A New Day

A New Day

A photo I took mid-summer 2017 on a balmy afternoon while on holiday in Scotland provided an inspiration to express the intense light of that day. The sunlight streamed through the wood creating beautiful shadows. I spent many an hour with my dog in these woods here marvelling at twisted tree shapes, the mosses, lichen, and enjoying the forest sounds and scents. The painting size is 24 x 18 x 0.5 inches

Summer along the River Goyt, Derbyshire

Summer along the River Goyt, Derbyshire

New Mills had to be one of my favourite visits of 2019. I stayed in the Fireman's Cottage close to the Old Mill and on the River Goyt 2nd week of August when the Torres Walk had just been reopened after the floods. The River was still very high and a dramatic sight and sound Sold

A Cold Winter's Day

A Cold Winter's Day

The sun glimmers weakly in a winter's sky.... the bleak fields feel uninviting as I stand on the edge of the village looking south easterly one frosty morning this December. The painting size is 16 x 20 inches

Reaching for the Skies

Reaching for the Skies

This canvas is inspired by photos I took in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. The quality of light under this hot January sun had a special luminosity probably due to the high elevation. The long-stemmed daisies are in different phases of opening, many buds waiting to burst open. They reach for the high clouds, their upturned faces soaking up the light. The sides of this canvas are painted blue Sold

Souris Island

Souris Island

This petit isle is etched in my soul having spent countless hours there over the 30-plus years I lived in Seychelles...in almost any weather it is a protected spot surrounded by shallow waters. It teems with beautiful corals, fish, and sea life as it falls within a marine park. The painting size is 16 x 20 inches

Wet Day Tulips

Wet Day Tulips

Two coral pink multipetaled tulips set against a worked black background The painting size is 8 x 20 x 0.5 inches

Here's Looking At You Kid

Here's Looking At You Kid

While in the Chewore South in Zimbabwe in late June 2022 I spent a couple of days on the Zambezi and hippos popped their heads up in curiosity as we made our way on the river. Their rough bellows and noise of them munching on the camp grass lulled me to sleep most nights. Their bulkiness on land turns to suppleness as they glide through the water, their hide glistening in the sunlight. This oil painting is 20 x 16 x 0.5 inches

Tropical Butterfly & LobsterClaw

Tropical Butterfly & LobsterClaw

This composition in oils of a Blue Clipper butterfly on a Heliconia bract encompasses many elements and interests.. The theory of chaos... intelligent cells responding to external stimuli forming a natural order and aesthetic harmony. Red and green, optical opposites, hot and cold colours, fragile and hard surfaces and structures, spiral design and exaggerated perspective. The painting size is 20 x 16 x 0.5 inches

Mist Forest Day Break

Mist Forest Day Break

In the winter months, I have a craving for vibrant colors and try to keep pictures of my life living in the tropics uppermost in my mind. I wanted to recreate the rich natural tapestry of cascading lianes and the luminosity of background light that you see when walking in the rainforest in the late afternoon as the sun begins to set. The painting size is 24 x 18 x 0.5 inches

Teasels

Teasels

A small square oil painting inspired by one of my walks across the fields in the fens in early spring. The painting is lightly varnished with matt varnish The painting size is 12 x 12 inches

'Blue in the Mist' Cow Parsley

'Blue in the Mist' Cow Parsley

Bamboo Parallel

Bamboo Parallel

This oil painting is inspired by photos I took in a scenic water garden in Norfolk plus a need to express the overwhelming light and luminosity given off by these strident structures. The geometric dagger-like shape and flat form of the leaves is in contrast to the conical parallels of the bamboo stems. The painting size is 16 x 20 inches

Favourite Colours

Favourite Colours

This oil painting is recalling a blustery morning in November 2016 enjoying coffee in one of Muizenberg CT,s fantastic cafes while my sons surfed in the choppy seas. The painting expresses the drama and unruly power of the waves in juxtaposition with the bright bold colours of the beach huts. The painting size is 16 x 20 x 0.5 inches Sold

'Surfing Today?'

'Surfing Today?'

The wind is whipping up the waves at Surfers' Corner, Muizenberg Beach, Cape Town South Africa. Muizenberg and many places in CT hold a very special place in my soul.. painting these subjects are holistic for me and a homage to the incredible warmth, dynamism, and spirit of the people I met. This work bears witness to the painter who selected the juxtaposition of colours of the beach huts. The painting size is 8 x 20 x 0.5 inches

Houghton Meadows

Houghton Meadows

This slow-flowing small river is an ox-bow, meandering through the ancient Houghton Meadows, a habitat for otters, many species of insects including the distinctive hairy dragonfly, and insect catching birds particularly terns and kingfishers. Even on summer days, it is a place of peace and interest. I have seen seals that have swum up from the Wash here also. The painting size is 18 x 24 x 0.5 inches

Spring Willows & Deer

Spring Willows & Deer

Blackthorn or Sloe in blossom and the fresh green of the willow trees in bud along the banks of the Great River Ouse near Houghton in Huntingdon created layers of reflections and shadows on the sunlit water. A Roe deer is on alert as it comes to the water's edge to drink The painting size is 24 x 18 x 0.5 inches

The Old Wooden Gate, Derbyshire

The Old Wooden Gate, Derbyshire

An Oil painting of a dilapidated wooden gate overlooking the rolling hillside and small town of Hathersage The patchwork of small fields is usually divided by dry stone walls, some dating back to the Bronze and Iron Age. 'Far Horizons' Beau Vallon, Seychelles

'Far Horizons' Beau Vallon, Seychelles

Back in 83 when I arrived to live in the granitic islands of Seychelles, the grey heron was a very rare sight, and since it is not a migratory bird it subsequent colonization of the islands is a mystery. I love this particular spot at the end of the beach as it is very secluded. The island on the horizon is Silhouette with North island just visible to the right. The painting size is 18 x 24 x 0.5 inches

Good Morning Fortnum & Mason

Good Morning Fortnum & Mason

Pink & Yellow Tulips in Brass Jug

Pink & Yellow Tulips in Brass Jug

A still life square oil painting of pastel coloured tulips in an ancient brass vase that is a favourite, having been with my family for generations. The cool blue of the window frame in the background contrasts with the pure pinks and yellows of the fresh flowers and the grounding tones of the old jug and work table. The painting size is 12 x 12 x 0.5 inches

' Just Chilling'Octopus

' Just Chilling'Octopus

Painted in oils in the spirit of the Jefferson Starship 1975 album, this red octopus is free in her world where she can transform at will. The innate awareness and adaptability of an animal that has hatched and is primarily solitary is something of an enigma The painting size is 24 x 18 x 0.5 inches

'Catching the Current' Batfish

'Catching the Current' Batfish

These serene batfish are gliding through a sublime ocean. This is an uncluttered oil canvas of primarily cool colours and tones creating a sense of calm and synchronicity below the waves. I have embellished the flanks of the fish with touches of gold acrylic. The painting size is 24 x 18 x 0.5 inches

Deep Water Parasol

Deep Water Parasol

'Chandelier of the Abyss' Compass Jellyfish

'Chandelier of the Abyss' Compass Jellyfish

There is a mystique quality about these ephemeral creatures of the deep ocean. This is a narrow vertical oil painting embellished with metallic acrylic. I wanted to create a sense of the claustrophobic dark versus radiating light in this linear work. The painting size is 8 x 20 x 0.5 inches

Sting Operative 2

Sting Operative 2

This oil painting is inspired by the highly active box jellyfish I photoed in an aquarium in Cape Town Waterfront. They provoke awe with their beauty and yet ability to do harm. I have used some metallic acrylic for the 'sparkle effect. The painting size is 24 x 18 x 0.5 inches

Black -winged Stilt Reflecting

Black -winged Stilt Reflecting

While in the Chewore South in Zimbabwe in late June 2022 I spent a couple of days on the Zambezi. This black-winged stilt was in the shallows early in the morning. I was standing on the raised bank almost directly overhead which made for an ideal shot. At first sight, their wings appear dense black but they have a blue/green sheen that catches the light. Their long pink legs seem a little incongruous. This oil painting is 20 x 16 x 0.5 inches.

'Familial Love' Highland Cattle

'Familial Love' Highland Cattle

An oil painting using photos I took of Highland Cattle along the River Lyon, near the Stronuich Reservoir in the Scottish Highlands in the summer of 2017. Mist partially obscures the horizon but there is enough sunlight to bring out the colours of the meadow flowers in the foreground. The painting size is 20 x 16 x 0.5 inches
