Reaching for the Skies

Reaching for the Skies

This canvas is inspired by photos I took in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. The quality of light under this hot January sun had a special luminosity probably due to the high elevation. The long-stemmed daisies are in different phases of opening, many buds waiting to burst open. They reach for the high clouds, their upturned faces soaking up the light. The sides of this canvas are painted blue The painting size is 18" x 24 " £195

The River Goyt, New Mills, Derbyshire

The River Goyt, New Mills, Derbyshire

New Mills had to be one of my favourite visits of 2019. I stayed in the Fireman's Cottage close to the Old Mill and on the River Goyt 2nd week of August when the Torres Walk had just been reopened after the floods. The River was still very high and a dramatic sight and sound Painting size 20 " x 16" £145

The Old Wooden Gate, Derbyshire

The Old Wooden Gate, Derbyshire

An Oil painting of a dilapidated wooden gate overlooking the rolling hillside and small town of Hathersage The patchwork of small fields is usually divided by dry stone walls, some dating back to the Bronze and Iron Age. This painting drew reference from a photo I took at the top of a hil overlooking Hathersage, with Shatton Moor in the distance. Painting size 16 " x 20 " £175

Houghton Meadows

Houghton Meadows

This slow-flowing small river is an ox-bow, meandering through the ancient Houghton Meadows, a habitat for otters, many species of insects including the distinctive hairy dragonfly, and insect catching birds particularly terns and kingfishers. Even on summer days, it is a place of peace and interest. I have seen seals that have swum up from the Wash here also. Painting size 18 " x 24 " £160

Sunset over The Gault (2)

Sunset over The Gault (2)

I live in Sutton -in- the -Isle, in the Fens, which is raised above a tidal flood plain. Periodically we are flooded and many roads closed. This area is known as The Gault due to its thick clay and is a haven for waterfowl, especially Hooper and Mute swans. As the temperature drops in the evening, the mist starts to rise and it is easy to imagine how travelers in the past could lose their way. Painting size 18 " x 24 " £ 120

Good Morning Fortnum & Mason

Good Morning Fortnum & Mason

Painted from photos taken at 9 am 26th August 2016 as majestic balloons floated over my home village. I worked for F&M for a year after returning to the UK giving some extra significance to the event. The sky was clear but added clouds for texture. Painting size 18 " x 24 " £120

Waiting for the Tide

Waiting for the Tide

This crabbing boat, the Patsy-Lou sits on the sandbanks of Wells-next-the -Sea on the Norfolk coast. There is a stiff breeze, strong enough to lift the buoy hanging from her bow. The bright sunlight on this summer day brings out the fresh colours of the water and sand as well as the blues of the distant horizon . Painting size 12 " x 12 " £70

Tulips in Yellow Jug

Tulips in Yellow Jug

A small oil painting that is light-hearted and fresh. I love this pale yellow jug that I picked up in an auction a few years ago. Along with the white tablecloth it provides a cool relief to the hot pink of the background and the vibrant tulip flowers. Painting size 12" x12" £80

Pink & Yellow Tulips in Brass Jug

Pink & Yellow Tulips in Brass Jug

Still life Square Oil Painting of pastel coloured tulips in an ancient brass vase that is a favourite, having been with my family for generations. The cool blue of the window frame in the background contrasts with the pure pinks and yellows of the fresh flowers and the grounding tones of the old jug and work table. Painting size; 12" x 12" £80

Bird of Paradise Flower

Bird of Paradise Flower

The strong colours and striking geometric patterns of the Bird of Paradise plant and flowers where this Southern Double-collared Sunbird flitted while feeding was an absorbing subject to paint. Getting a decent shot of this fast-moving bird in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town was also quite a challenge as they suck the nectar from flowers while hovering on the wing and just don't seem to keep still. . Painting size 20 " x 16 " £275

Giant Palm Leaves

Giant Palm Leaves

The leaves of the Coco de Mer Palm are the largest in the world. Being in a forest of these giants in the only place they occur naturally is truly a sensory overload of colour and shapes. Painting size; 20" x 16" £100

Deep in the Rain Forest

Deep in the Rain Forest

There is nothing to compare with a tropical mist forest, the prolific growth, towering palms accentuated by their slenderness. The strong clear colours, shapes within shapes, the sense of being protected from the elements. I rarely wore shoes in my years of living on the islands so being close to nature was a constant. The warmth of the soil, the miniature contours underfoot are all part of your sensory daily download. Painting size 20 " x 16 " Sold

'Far Horizons' Beau Vallon, Seychelles

'Far Horizons' Beau Vallon, Seychelles

Back in 83 when I arrived to live in the granitic islands of Seychelles, the grey heron was a very rare sight, and since it is not a migratory bird it subsequent colonization of the islands is a mystery. I love this particular spot at the end of the beach as it is very secluded. The island on the horizon is Silhouette with North island just visible to the right. Painting size 18 " x 24 " £160

Sting Operative 2

Sting Operative 2

This oil painting is inspired by the highly active box jellyfish I photoed in an aquarium in Cape Town Waterfront. They provoke awe with their beauty and yet ability to do harm. I have used some metallic acrylic for the 'sparkle effect. Painting size; 24" x 18" £190

Empyreal Ocean

Empyreal Ocean

'Leap from the Deep' Sailfish

'Leap from the Deep' Sailfish

This Oil painting draws reference from days I have spent out on old wooden schooners travelling from island to island.. the flash of an espadon springing from the deep blue on a rough squally day was a moment to live for. Painting size 24 " x 18 " £175

'Out of the Mystic' Sea Turtles

'Out of the Mystic' Sea Turtles

These beautiful timeless sea creatures are caught 'frozen' in time in contrast to the maelstrom in the ocean around them. Painting size 24 " x 18 ". £250

'Catching the Current' Batfish

'Catching the Current' Batfish

These serene Batfish are gliding through a sublime ocean. This is an uncluttered oil canvas of primarily cool colours and tones creating a sense of calm and synchronicity below the waves. I have embellished the flanks of the fish with touches of gold acrylic. Painting size 24 " x 18 " £250

Red Octopus

Red Octopus

Painted in oils in the spirit of the Jefferson Starship 1975 album, this red octopus is free in her world where she can transform at will. The innate awareness and adaptability of an animal that has hatched and is primarily solitary is something of an enigma Painting size 24 " x 18 " £175

Verdant Hills, Scotland

Verdant Hills, Scotland

The sheer wildness of Scotland, untainted by man-made structures, the clarity of the colours due to recent rains inspire me to depict these rolling mountains in oils. Painting size 16 " x 20 " £120

'Familial Love' Highland Cattle

'Familial Love' Highland Cattle

An Oil using photos I took of Highland Cattle along the River Lyon, near the Stronuich Reservoir in the Scottish Highlands in the summer of 2017. Mist partially obscures the horizon but there is enough sunlight to bring out the colours of the meadow flowers in the foreground. Painting size 20" x 16" £145

Summer in Woodland, Scotland

Summer in Woodland, Scotland

A photo I took mid-summer 2017 on a balmy afternoon while on holiday in Scotland provided an inspiration to express the intense light of that day. The sunlight streamed through the wood creating beautiful shadows. I spent many an hour with my dog in these woods here marvelling at twisted tree shapes, the mosses, lichen, and enjoying the forest sounds and scents. Painting size 18 " x 24 " Sold
