I painted these hollyhocks from specimens picked in my garden. Hollyhocks are renowned for their robustness and ability to survive through all weather conditions, which has certainly been true this summer. In fact they seemed to reach for the skies at over 10 feet high..They are also a symbol of abundance and fertility,mirrored by the multitude of seeds they provide. These flowers are both delicate and strong,they bend in the breeze. Anemone,Greek for Daughter of the Wind was a beautiful nymph who was turned into a flower by Chloris, the scorned wife of Zephyr. The wind god Boreas fell in love with her but Anemone wasn’t interested, each spring he blows open her petals, fading them prematurely. I wanted to express the classic lines of this beautiful flower. This is a simple botanical study in watercolour using photos I took at the beautiful ancient garden of Houghton Manor that has a most wonderful collection of many Iris varieties. This ancient house that is in Hemingford Grey, near St Ives, Huntingdon, with its beautiful gardens that have had tender care for nearly 1000 years is a real treat to paint. I wanted to impart a sense of unruliness in this painting as well as fresh lightness and buoyancy in the riot of form and colour which throws the house and tree line into the background.
